Incense burning instructions
This page contains information about how to burn Frankincense, Myrrh and other incense using a Charcoal Incense burner or a Thermostat Controlled Incense Burner.
1- Instructions on burning incense using OUD COLLECTION’s supplied Charcoal Incense burner:
To burn incense, you will need an incense burner, charcoal tablet and incense.
The first step is to light the charcoal:
- Take one charcoal tablet and light it - you can do this by holding the charcoal with a tong and by using a candle, lighter or a blowtorch which can burn the charcoal. You can also put the charcoal tablet on the gas stove top to burn it.
- Once you see that charcoal is burnt from the edges, put it on the incense burner. The charcoal will take another few minutes to light completely and you will see white ash forming on the top, this is when charcoal is ready for incense burning. Hint: Some people will light the charcoal for a minute or two on the flame and then place it on the burner and blow air at it to make it burn quickly. You can also try it if you think it is safe to do so.
- Do not cover the charcoal while burning, it will deplete the oxygen supply and charcoal will cool down.
- When you see that there is a grayish ash on the surface of the charcoal disc, this is the time to place resin such as Frankincense, Myrrh, herbs or any other incense on top of the disc. There are different type of incense, each one has its own burning rate, some are dry while some leave a melted residue behind.
- If using resin, place small pieces on top. Large pieces may carbonize before the essential oil has been fully released, resulting in a bitter smell. Once a piece of resin has fully burnt, knock it off with your tongs and replace it with a fresh piece. Each disc should burn for at least 30 minutes and can often be made to burn longer by knocking off the coating of ash as it builds up.
- Never hold or touch burning charcoal with your fingers. Do not check if it is extinguished by touching it. You can ensure the charcoal is extinguished by pouring some water on it.
2- Instructions on burning incense using electric thermostat controlled burner:
There are different types of incense, each one has its own burning rate, some are dry and some leave a melted residue behind. For the dry incense, you can put it directly on the burner’s tray and after the burning session, the left over blackish-coloured burnt incense residue can be thrown away easily off the tray.
While for other incenses, such as Frankincense and Somali Bakhoors, that are sold by OUD COLLECTION, when they are burnt completely, you will see the melted residue left behind on the tray. Most of the time, it is easy to take it off with a stainless steel spoon or something similar but sometimes you need to scrub it hard under running water with a stainless steel scrubber. To burn such incense, we recommend you to use an aluminum foil on top of the tray, make sure when you put the foil it touches the tray surface properly so that heat can pass through. Put your incense on top of the foil layer, once your burning session has completed then you only need to take off the foil and you are set for another session.
Controlling incense burner heat comes with the experience. If you are a beginner and it is your first time burning frankincense, then use the above tip to use foil on the tray. Take a little bit of frankincense, say about two or three pieces or a tea spoon quantity, and put on the burner tray. Start the burner on the lowest heat setting and wait for a little while till you feel that burner has warmed up. At this time you will start smelling light fragrance coming out of the incense. Wait a little bit more, if the temperature is right then the strength of fragrance will increase gradually and you will see smoke coming out of the incense. If you don’t see it, then you have to raise the temperature until you start smelling light fragrance and can also see smoke rising gradually from the incense. But if the fragrance starts getting too strong quickly then you have to reduce the heat setting. The key for incense burning is to burn incense slowly and gradually. With some experience you will know the exact setting for each incense, all you need is a couple of tries. When you see that the incense has burned about 80% or so then you can raise the heat setting to high and burn the remaining incense quickly for couple of minutes. Once you see that incense has almost burned then switch off the burner, the idea is to only have beautiful incense smoke and not the burnt smell.
Follow the above tips and try it a couple of times, you will get a hang of it. If you still face any difficulty then reach out to us via email and we will help you with your question.

At OUD COLLECTION™, we create perfumes that leave a lasting impression — on the skin and in memory.
Our difference lies in the quality of our materials, the craft behind each formula, and the way we balance luxury with wearability. Whether you choose our bold Extrait de Parfums or our concentrated Perfume Oils, every scent is designed to feel distinctive, modern, and deeply satisfying.
We don’t follow trends. We create fragrances that people return to — not because they’re mass-marketed, but because they’re unforgettable.
Expect performance. Expect compliments. Expect to find a new favourite.
Are your products vegan?
Our products generally do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. If a product contains real musk or ambergris, it will be clearly stated in the product description.
Are your perfumes gendered?
No. We believe fragrance isn’t about gender — it’s about connection. Wear what moves you.
What kind of ingredients do you use?
We use a blend of high-quality natural and synthetic ingredients — chosen not by trend, but by performance, beauty, and how they feel on skin.
From rare oud, sandalwood, and florals to modern musks and cutting-edge aroma molecules, every material is selected with intent. Our artisanal oils and niche extraits feature rare naturals and handcrafted blends, while our Designer+ range focuses on elegance, strength, and signature-level wearability.
We don’t cut corners — we create compositions that smell luxurious, last long, and feel unforgettable.
What can I expect from the scent experience?
Expect development. Expect richness. Our perfumes don’t shout in the first spray — they unfold, shift, and settle with time. Every transition is intentional, every drydown considered.
Are these artisanal fragrances?
Many of our fragrances are — especially if you're exploring our perfume oils and niche extraits.
Our Fusion Series (Artisanal), Enthusiast Series, and Raw Naturals collections are all part of our artisanal oil category, made with care, craftsmanship, and rare materials.
Our partner collection, AL GHALIYAH, represents niche artisanal perfumery of the highest order — deep, complex extrait de parfums for serious fragrance lovers.
On the other hand, our Fusion Series (Heritage) is crafted as a more mainstream collection, perfect for daily wear with classic Middle Eastern profiles.
And our OUD COLLECTION™ Extrait de Parfums sit in their own lane — Designer+ style fragrances created for modern users who want bold, likable, long-lasting scents with elevated quality.
In short: whether you’re looking for artisanal depth or everyday elegance, we offer both — and always with quality as our foundation.
I’m used to designer perfumes. Will this be very different?
Not necessarily — and that’s the beauty of what we offer.
If you enjoy designer-style perfumes, our OUD COLLECTION™ Extrait de Parfums are a perfect fit. These are spray perfumes with bold presence, modern appeal, and far better longevity and richness than most mainstream options.
Curious about something more refined or personal? Our perfume oils offer a completely different experience — alcohol-free, intimate on skin, and beautifully long-lasting. Whether you choose the Fusion Series for everyday elegance or our Enthusiast and Artisanal collections for something deeper, they’re an effortless upgrade from watered-down designer scents.
And for those ready to explore fragrance on another level — AL GHALIYAH Extrait de Parfums is our artisanal, niche line. These are serious compositions: bold, complex, and crafted for those who want more than just something that smells nice. If you’re looking for character, grit, and artistry — this is where you’ll find it.
No matter your starting point, we’ve created something that will meet you — and move you — along your fragrance journey.
Do you use real oud and other perfumery ingredients?
Yes. We use real oud — including wild oud and sustainably cultivated oud — depending on the intent of the composition. Alongside this, we work with high-quality natural materials like Rose Ottos, rare Frangipani, Gardenia absolute, and other ingredients crafted by skilled artisans — not mass-produced.
To shape the experience, we also use carefully composed accords and select modern aroma molecules that add texture, performance, and nuance. Everything is chosen with purpose — to create a fragrance that feels alive, complete, and unforgettable.
What’s the difference between fragrance oils and real oils?
Fragrance oils are lab-created blends made to mimic natural materials. They’re affordable and widely used — for instance, rose fragrance oil can cost less than $100 per kilo.
But real oils are a different world. Take Rose Otto: steam-distilled from fresh rose petals, requiring over 4 tonnes to yield just one kilo. The result? A material that can cost more than $15,000 per kilo — unmatched in purity, complexity, and emotional impact.
At OUD COLLECTION™, when we say "real," we mean it — genuine Oud, true Rose Ottos, Indian Sandalwood, and other rare materials sourced for their beauty, not convenience. That’s what sets the soul of our fragrances apart.
What’s the difference between your Extrait de Parfum and Perfume Oil?
The main difference is in the format and how the scent wears on your skin.
Our Extrait de Parfums (from both OUD COLLECTION™ and AL GHALIYAH) are spray-based and alcohol-based, designed for strong projection, presence, and lasting impact. They’re perfect if you’re used to designer perfumes and want something with elevated ingredients, bold character, and serious performance.
Our Perfume Oils (available across our Fusion Series, Enthusiast Series, and Raw Naturals) are alcohol-free and applied directly to the skin. They wear closer, evolve more intimately, and are incredibly long-lasting in a different, more personal way.
If you want expressive, radiant scent trails — go with the Extrait sprays.
If you prefer a more understated, skin-worn experience — explore our Perfume Oils.
Both offer exceptional quality — just different ways to wear and enjoy fragrance.
Are your perfumes long-lasting?
Absolutely. We design our compositions to evolve over time — not fade quickly. Thanks to rich naturals and carefully selected aroma materials, most of our customers report excellent longevity across formats.
Do you offer samples?
Yes. Most of our perfumes are available in smaller formats to explore before committing to a full bottle. We want every purchase to feel right, not rushed.
How should I choose a scent if I’m new to niche perfumery?
Focus less on notes, more on what moves you. If you’re unsure, start with multiple samples or message us — we’ll guide you based on what you love (and what you’re ready to explore).
